Fairtrade

Fairtrade Towns in UK

Great to hear that there will be another Fairtrade Town in the UK next year. Plans are afoot to make Cumbernauld a Fairtrade town alongside Motherwell up in North Lanarkshire.

There are many Fairtrade towns around the UK and it began back in 2000 with Garstang in Lancashire when it stated they were ‘the Worlds first Fairtrade Town’. There are over 500 Fairtrade Towns with more to come as more towns are planning to apply.

So what is a Fairtrade town? A Fairtrade Town is any area such as a town, city, village, county, zone, island or borough that is committed to supporting Fairtrade and making sure that products with the FAIRTRADE Mark are used (from Fairtrade Foundation). Anywhere can achieve a Fairtrade status and everyone should be involved.

Here at Acorn Printing we fully support Fairtrade and organic clothing, we have a great range of Fairtrade clothing that you personalise for yourself, event for business. Please get in touch if you’d like to find out more about our Fairtrade policy and clothing.

Why did Green Nippers choose to go organic?

Many thanks to Green Nippers for this guest post.  There are so many benefits of clothes which are made from organic cotton; the most noticeable benefit is that they are so much softer. Organic cotton is a perfect choice for a baby’s delicate and sensitive skin, especially those suffering from eczema. Green Nippers organic clothing is soft, high quality and contains no nasty chemicals or pesticides. Green Nippers clothes are dyed using azo free, natural, biodegradable, non toxic dyes without the use of heavy metals. The reason why Green Nippers products are made from 100% organic cotton is so they are not harmful to the environment or the baby/child wearing them. Babies and young children’s skin is sensitive and delicate, which allows the chemicals found in conventional cotton clothing to be absorbed into their thin skin and can then find their way into their bloodstream.

green nippers logoOrganic cotton is soft, cool and comfortable to wear. It consists of longer fibres so is therefore is softer and gentler for their delicate skin reducing allergic reaction. Organic cotton helps babies who suffer with eczema it doesn’t contain the finishing chemicals or pesticide residues, such as formaldehyde, which is found in conventional cotton, which irritate the babies skin. Formaldehyde is harmful and irritant to a baby’s skin, and has been linked to allergies such as asthma and eczema. Your baby’s skin is very delicate and thin, which means that chemicals found in conventional cotton clothing can be harmful as they can be absorbed into their thin skin and can find their way into their bloodstream.

Organic fabrics are sustainable, are not harmful to the environment as they are grown naturally. Organic cotton farming only uses natural pesticides and the crops are largely rain fed. The soils are fertilised with natural organic materials, which help retain moisture and its fertility. Organic cotton provides a better income for farmers as consumers are prepared to pay a premium for the quality of organic cotton. Mostly organic cotton is purchased before the crop is grown, which gives farmers the security of income too. Conventional cotton accounts for one quarter of global pesticide use; with alarming environmental and social consequences. Each year there are 20,000 deaths in developing countries from poisoning by agricultural pesticides used on crops. It is better for our carbon footprint to use organic cotton as organic cotton production emits around half the CO2 produced by conventional cotton production when using modern methods.

green nippers organic baby clothesAre organic baby clothes plain and boring?
No, of course not. Green Nippers have proven that using organic cotton does not mean that you have to limit the colours. A bright and lively colour palette has been created using azo free, non toxic dyes without the use of heavy metals, which are natural and biodegradable.  Our collection features unique detailing such as lace, appliqués, buttons, pockets and collars.

Green Nippers Debut Collection (0 to 12 months) consists of fashionable and unique baby grows that are designed as “little outfits”, which are practical, comfortable and suitable for all year round. The collection of all in one outfits are designed specifically for babies to sleep, eat and play in, whether out and about or just lounging at home.

Green Nippers Junior Collection (0 to 5 years) will be launched in August 2011. The range will include smart and practical dresses, smock tops, t-shirts and leggings for girls. For the boys there are a wonderful range of t-shirts, stylish trousers and dungarees.

What are Green Nippers best-selling products?

Our best selling organic girls baby grows are Apple Blossom and Bonnie Bow, our best selling organic boys baby grows are Ollie and Harry Hood. Our unisex baby grow Vanilla Star and all of our organic baby accessories sell really well too.

green nippers organic baby clothingAre organic baby clothes easy to care for?
Yes, organic baby clothes are made from high quality and durable organic fabrics, which hold their shape wash after wash. This allows them to be worn over and over again and passed onto siblings and other relatives or friends to wear once they are too small. The Green Nippers products are easy to care for, they can be machine washed at 40oc although we recommend the customer to think about the climate and wash at 30oc.

What certifications do you need to look for?
All Green Nippers products are certified by the Soil Association and manufactured in a Control Union certified factory in Turkey, under the Global Organic Textile Standard.

The Soil Association organic symbol is the UK’s largest and most recognisable trademark for organic produce. The Soil Association certification gives the consumer peace of mind that what they are buying is 100% organic.

How do Green Nippers appeal to the gifting market?
Our baby grows and accessories make ideal gifts for any occasion. Through our website, if customers would like to make their gift extra special we offer beautiful gift packaging, priced at £3.75.
If they choose to have their items gift wrapped, we wrap their products in recycled and biodegradable tissue paper sealing it with Green Nippers printed degradable tape then place your products in a recycled and biodegradable natural gift box. A Greener Festival

This is a guest post from Ben Challis one of the Co-Founders of A Greener Festival.

A Greener Festival is a not for profit organisation that promotes sustainability and environmentally friendly practices and music festivals and other live events. Whilst a number of festivals in the United Kingdom and elsewhere around the World have been instrumental in promoting green living and sustainable lifestyles for many years, there seemed to be a need to have a central resource where event organisers – and festival goers – could swap ideas and good practice. A Greener Festival grew out of that need and our 2005 research which showed that the audience going to events was worried about noise, pollution, waste and, increasingly, greenhouse gas emissions.

A GREENER FESTIVALAgainst a background of increasing recognition of climate change and the effect of greenhouse gases on climate, and a dramatic increase in planned legislation, we hope to have helped music and arts festivals around the World promote sustainable events and sustainable lifestyles. Last year 47 festivals entered our Greener Festival Awards scheme, hundreds of festival goers took part in our Great Big Green ideas competition, we spoke to hundreds of event organisers at conferences and seminars around the World (in Australia, Hungary, Finland, Belgium, Germany, UK in 2010-2011), we helped introduce a new discount scheme for insurance for festivals who engage in green initiatives, produced and promoted a new album, ‘Festival Harvest’ with 28 new bands packaged in lower carbon recycled card and we visited a number of Universities promoting sustainable event management.

Winners of the ‘outstanding’ Greener Festuval Award in 2010 were Big Tent (Scotland), Croissant Neuf Summer Party (England), Boom (Portugal), Isle of Wight Festival (England), Lightning in a Bottle (USA), Osheaga (Canada), Oya Festival (Norway), Peats Riige (Australia), Shambala (England), Sunrise Summer Celebration (England) and Wood Festival (England) whilst ‘highly commended’ events included the Glastonbury Festival, T-in-the-Park, Waveform, Bonnaroo in the USA, Malmo Festival in Norway and Bestival.
